Essential Oil Safety and Use

I have been using essential oils for almost two decades and always want to make sure new users know how to safely use these amazing tools in their lives. I was trained on essential oil use at Bastyr School of Natural Medicince in Seattle, Washington and have written a book called Essential Oils Unlocked (3rd edition now available as an online membership site. I am also the aromatherapy instructor the IHHA Certified Naturopathic Doctor Program.

Safe Use of Essential Oils

Before you use essential oils, know that not all oils are created equal. Typically, high-quality essential oils go through rounds of rigorous testing to ensure the product is safe to use. Not all companies use thorough testing methods, and many essential oil distributors will use synthetic fillers that alter the efficacy of the oils.

Only use essential oils that have been carefully produced and thoroughly tested to ensure safety for you and your family. Essential Oil Use

THREE WAYS TO USE


Through smell. (Aromatically)

We call this “aromatic” use of essential oils. This includes any application method that helps you experience the aroma of the oil. You can use essential oils aromatically by:

➝Diffusing in an essential oil diffuser

➝Applying a drop to your hands and inhaling

➝Wearing as a personal fragrance

On your skin. (Topically)

“Topical” application of essential oils allows the oil to absorb into the skin. Some ways to use essential oils on your skin are:

➝Massage

➝Apply to targeted areas and rub in

➝Add to lotions or moisturizers

Ingesting. (Internal)

“Internal” use of essential oils allows the oil to be transported throughout your body. Make sure the essential oil is safe for internal use first, and then try one of these methods:

➝Add to a glass of water

➝Take in a veggie capsule

➝Put a drop under your tongue

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Lavender is widely considered a must-have essential oil because of its versatility. The gentle, relaxing aroma of Lavender promotes a peaceful environment. When taken internally, it can help soothe and relax the mind.* Lavender is a go-to for reducing the appearance of skin imperfections when applied topically. Add it to bathwater for a soothing soak or apply it to your temples and the back of your neck. Add a few drops to pillows, bedding, or the bottoms of your feet to prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

Peppermint Essential Oil is derived from the peppermint plant—a hybrid of water mint and spearmint— that is a popular powerhouse of nature. Peppermint’s versatility comes from its remarkable combination of flavor, aroma, and wellness benefits.
